The user authentication method required by this server can’t be found

We have apple clients? I had no idea. But apparently when we pulled the Novell file servers out we had some apple file shares that were now broken.

When the client attempts to connect to the Microsoft windows 2003 server share they see this error “the user authentication method required by this server can’t be found…”

Easy fix. As long as File services for Macintosh is installed under add/remove components and the AppleTalk Protocol is enabled. then this might work for you.

  1. Go into computer management and expand system tools.
  2. Right click on Shared folders and select Configure File Server for Macintosh.
  3. Change Enable authentication to “Apple Clear Text”
  4. OK and Save
